The sound is jarring, a wet thud that vibrates through the chassis of your car. Your heart races as you steer onto the gravel shoulder, tires grating as you brake hard.
You kill the engine, feeling a strange stillness after hours of the steady hum.
Stepping out, the heat hits you, a dry, baking wave. You round the back of your vehicle, bracing yourself for gore, and stop dead.
It’s a hawk. Still breathing, glaring at you as it's talons scrape against the dirt, but the left wing hangs at a crude angle. He's not flying anywhere soon.
